Mesothelioma in wikipedia

Mesothelioma is a rare, aggressive form of cancer that develops in the lining of the lungs, abdomen, or heart. Caused by asbestos, mesothelioma has no known cure and has a very poor prognosis.
More than 80% of mesothelioma cases are caused by exposure to asbestos.
The greater the exposure the greater the risk. As of 2013 about 125 million people have been exposed to asbestos at work.
High rates of disease occur in people who mine asbestos, produce products from asbestos, work with asbestos products, live with asbestos workers, or work in buildings containing asbestos.
Asbestos exposure and the onset of cancer are generally separated by about 40 years.Washing the clothing of someone who worked with asbestos also increases the risk.
Other risk factors include genetics and infection with the simian virus 40. The diagnosis may be suspected based on chest X-ray and CT scan findings, and is confirmed by either examining fluid produced by the cancer or by a tissue biopsy of the cancer.

Individuals At Risk of exposed to asbestos

Individuals At Risk of exposed to asbestos
The number of mesothelioma cases is higher in those that had the occasion to work around asbestos products longer and with higher intensity, like people in the construction trades. And because of the latency period (the time from the first exposure to airborne asbestos particles and the time that mesothelioma first appears), the tumor may not appear until after the worker has retired.

Those workers who were closely exposed to asbestos, such as insulators, pipefitters, plasterers and boilermakers, are at highest risk. However, there are many cases of people getting mesothelioma who had very little on-the-job exposure or who were exposed to asbestos "third hand". For example, people who worked only a summer job in construction as a teenager or house wives who washed their husband's clothes that were covered in asbestos particles. There are also many people being diagnosed with mesothelioma now who didn't know they were ever exposed to asbestos. Like those in the Navy several decades ago who worked around people using asbestos when they had no reason to think they were being exposed to anything harmful.

The O'Brien Law Firm has successfully represented people from the following groups:
  • Asbestos workers/Insulators
  • Boilermakers
  • Ironworkers
  • Sheetmetal workers
  • Carpenters
  • Floor tile layers
  • Plumbers
  • Pipefitters
  • Laborers
  • Power plant operators
  • Brake mechanics
  • Foundry workers
  • Refinery/chemical plant workers
  • Shipbuilders
  • Installers of sewer and water pipes
  • Housewives and family members of the above tradesmen
